Drug Addiction and Its Social Effects

Although the physiological and mental of drugs on the user is well documented, the social repercussions of the problem are often not. It is in fact on the social side of things that substance dependency has unleashed its most damaging attack.

We know that many times, drug addiction causes marriage breakups, lose of employment, bankruptcy and many more, but often, our minds are limited to that. We fail to see a couple’s divorce because of drugs affect their children who, because of their anger and frustration may also turn to drugs later in life. Then they would also get divorced and their children will turn out to be just like them. It would become a cycle of pain, anger, and sadness fuelled by drug dependency.

Many drug addicts fail to recognise this effect. They think they are hurting only themselves and no one else. They do not feel the sorrow of the people who love them and the anguish that those who are affected most, their children, are going through. Perhaps if we can educate people about the social effects of drug addiction, it can trigger a change in people.
